Novaport: Emera Island Period #2

Man About The Island

Let's cast our minds back to a couple of years ago. What exactly happened between Enola, Sommer, and Toni?

Naivety

Seemingly like most relationships on the island, it all started at the local market. Enola was delivering homegrown fruits and vegetables, ready to be sold. Little did she know that Toni Wai had been observing her for a while.

He noticed she was struggling with some particularly large melons, and offered a helping hand. They continued to talk afterwards, with Toni generously buying Enola a drink at the nearby cocktail bar.

Enola: Your side of the island is quiet, isn't it?

Toni: Only if you drown out the arguments between my brother and the Ahi tribe.

Enola: What do they even argue about?

Toni: I don't know...we've always hated each other, way before any of us were born, and it's not hard to see why.

Enola had heard rumours about the wars between the two tribes, resulting in many untimely deaths. The Ahi were dying out, but perhaps it was their own fault. They were notorious for being aggressive and rude to other people on the island.

Enola: Is it because...your people killed a lot of them?

Toni: If you knew anything about them, you'd know why we did those things...

Enola: Still...

Toni: That's why I like coming here, away from it all. Not to mention the women on this side of the island are quite attractive, especially you Honua women.

Toni's words made Enola blush.

Toni: So, I think you'll be seeing a lot more of me.

He stayed true to his word. The pair would often meet at the market, talking over drinks. Then, they began taking walks around the island, exploring the golden beaches and emerald hills. It was on one of these beaches that the couple shared their first kiss.

After a while, Enola wanted to take things to the next level. They hadn't met each other families yet, but her mother and sister were aware of the relationship. Did Toni's family know about her?

Eventually, Enola introduced Toni to her sister, Sommer. She told her so much about him - how he made her smile and feel special. And Sommer wanted to meet Toni to make sure he was a good man, for her sister was awful at noticing the bad in people.

Enola: This is my younger sister, Sommer. And this is Toni.

Sommer: Hello.

Toni: I've seen Sommer around, you do look a lot like each other.

Sommer: Enola has told me a lot about you...and I mean A LOT

Toni: Is that so?

Enola: You're making sound obsessed, Sommer...

Sommer: It's a good thing for Toni, but not for my ears.

Throughout the conversation, Toni couldn't help but stare at Sommer. There was something about her that was different to Enola - the way she held herself in conversation; her feisty yet care-free attitude.

From then on, the time Toni spent with Enola was overshadowed by his desire for her sister. He grew bored of their long walks, of hearing about the mundane stories of Enola's family. He wanted something more, but not Enola's idea of more. As Toni became infatuated with Sommer, his conversations with Enola narrowed to one subject: her sister.

Soon, Enola noticed the difference in her lover's behaviour. His kisses became swift, his embrace cold, and his words minimal - unless Sommer was the topic. Perhaps it was a family matter that was weighing Toni down, Enola thought.

On her sister's advice, Enola asked Toni what was bothering him. He went along with the lie, that it was just family problems. Enola offered him comfort, but he could find no such thing in her anymore.

Inimical Intentions

Toni was once again at the market, and this time it was Sommer who was struggling with heavy melons. So, he tried the same thing he did with Enola, except this time Sommer refused his help. That was the difference between the sisters, Toni thought.

Perhaps offering to buy Sommer a drink would work, which it did. She wasn't one to turn down free alcohol.

Toni: You're so different from your sister.

Sommer: Is that a bad thing?

Toni: No, not at all. I actually like it.

Sommer: You...like it?

Toni: Enola is sweet and all, but she's just not my type...

Sommer: What?

Toni: Ever since I met you, I can't stop thinking about you.

Sommer didn't know what to say.

Toni: It drives me crazy. When I'm with her, all I can imagine is being with you instead.

Sommer: Why...why are you still seeing her, then?

Toni: Because I want to get close to you. We could have so much fun together.

Sommer: How dare you...you think you can use my sister to get to me!?

Toni: Well, it's not like-

Sommer: You can have this drink back, you vermin.

Sommer threw the drink, which Toni paid for, in his face and stormed off. She ran home to her sister, to tell her what happened.

Now everything made sense.

However, Enola blamed herself. If only she didn't introduce Sommer to Toni, things could have been different. But Sommer thought otherwise. "A man like that will never be tied down", she told her grieving sister.
